How Much Should You Water Your Round Rock Lawn

There are plenty of different questions you will end up asking yourself as a Round Rock homeowner, and one of the most common is just how much water your lawn needs to stay healthy. This is a more complicated question that it may seem since so many variables exist that can influence it.

The basic rule of thumb is that a lawn in the Round Rock area will need between 1 and 2 inches of water every week. However, this also requires that the water reach a total depth of 6 inches into the earth. Additionally, the exact number largely depends on the type of grass you have on your lawn.

Here are some of the basic figures for the most common types of grass found in the Round Rock area:

  • Bluegrass, Perennial Rye, and Tall Fescue about 1.5 to 2 inches of water per week.
  • Common Bermuda about 1 inch per week
  • Centipede grass about 1 inch per week
  • Hybrid Bermuda, Zoysia, and St. Augustine about 1 to 1.5 inches.

Again, those figures are based on a penetration of 6 inches. To determine how deep your water has reached, the best option is to use a screwdriver. Plunge the screwdriver into the lawn. If it penetrates easily and comes out moist, you know you've watered enough. A water gauge placed in the yard while the sprinklers are on is also a great way to monitor the amount of water you're giving your lawn.

Remember that your grass still needs water during the winter months. In most cases you'll only need to give it a half inch per week during the winter. Snow doesn't replace rainfall, either. An inch of snow translates to only one-tenth of an inch of rainfall, so keep that in mind when watering your lawn.

Also try to water in the early morning. The sun will evaporate most of your efforts quickly and it's important that you take the time to wake up before the sun's rays come out and complete your watering, or set your sprinklers to come on in the AM. Otherwise you'll need double the water to get the same results.

If you'll keep these basic points in mind you'll be able to give your grass the perfect amount of water and make sure that it looks great year-round. It only takes a little effort to figure out just how much to water, and the results will be amazing to see. Water smart, and your yard will be the envy of the entire neighborhood.
